World Wetlands Day: Nature That Sustains Life

Депутати обласної та районної рад завітали до БТЛ Радовель

February 2 marks World Wetlands Day.

In 1971, the Ramsar Convention was signed—the first global agreement dedicated to the protection of wetlands. Since then, increasing attention has been paid to these unique ecosystems, as they are disappearing even faster than forests.

Scientists continue to emphasize that nature works on its own. Wetlands:

  • purify water from pollutants
  • reduce the risk of flooding
  • provide habitats for biodiversity
  • help stabilize the climate and groundwater levels

The overall impact of human activity on nature remains largely negative. Industry, deforestation, and pollution continue to alter the biosphere, contributing to climate change, biodiversity loss, and the degradation of natural ecosystems.

Students of Biotechnological Lyceum "Radowell" have already visited wetlands as part of the program “Nature as an Educational Space,” including field studies in the Radovel Forestry and the Polissia Nature Reserve. The students will prepare research projects on wetland restoration, working with real case studies, field materials, and scientific sources. This is not just learning about a problem—it is an opportunity to become part of the solution.

Happy World Wetlands Day! Let us protect nature together!
