When Mathematics Meets Geography: An Educational Expedition to the Forest Museum
What do geography and mathematics have in common?
At first glance, they may seem like completely different subjects. But once you step beyond the classroom, the connection becomes obvious. Mathematics helps us measure, calculate, plan routes, and create maps.
Geography shows why all those mathematical formulas are needed in real life. This is exactly how mathematics transforms geography from a descriptive subject into a precise science—the science of Earth, space, and interconnected systems.
To demonstrate this connection in practice, teachers at Biotechnological Lyceum "Radowell" recently organized a real educational adventure for their students. Sixth-graders traveled to the Forest Museum in Kostopil, where they:
- determined the distance from Radovel to Kostopil using different methods
- calculated the diameter of tree trunks and estimated their age
- created site plans and route maps
- described the forest as a natural ecosystem, including its relief, climate, plants, animals, and natural resources
- developed their own guide, “Rules of Behavior in the Forest”
- identified the cardinal directions using natural signs
Learning through experience means that children explore, understand, and ultimately change the world around them.
